May 2012
April we continue to focus food and healthy eating. We discovered the difference between portions and servings. Portion is the amount of food you put on your plate. A serving is a specific amount of food defined by common measurements, such as tablespoons or cups. We learned about visual cues for reminding us of appropriate serving sizes: baseball, hockey puck, 4 dice, and a deck of cards. We also explored: How far would you need to walk to burn off one M&M? The energy stored in one plain M&M is enough to fuel a 150 pound walker across a football field. Both end zones included. This may not impress you - until you stand at one goal post with a tiny M&M clutched in your fist. That should help you appreciate the physical effort necessary to burn off one little treat. By the way, a peanut M&M equals 2 football fields!
Attention parents of 6th grade students
State law requires that all students must have had their second MMR(measles, mumps, rubella) and DT (diphtheria and tetanus) immunizations before they begin 7th grade. Please make an appointment today with your physician or go to RiverStone Health Clinic for these immunizations as soon as possible. Turn in documentation to your elementary or middle school secretary. If you need assistance, please call me at 247-3367.
