Spelling
All spelling words are taken from our literature books and our thematic units in Social Studies and Science. Each week students will be given activities to help build their knowledge of vocabulary and spelling skills. Tests are ALWAYS held on Friday. Please take a few minutes to read through spelling words every night!
Reading: We finished Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry! This book is always on the list of favorites! We learned so much about segregation during the 1930's! We spent a lot of time discussing friendships and family as well. We will read the short novel Number the Stars next. This book is based in Nazi Germany, during World War II.
Science: Thank You to our wonderful school nurse, who taught us about healthy choices and portion sizes! We now know that in order to walk off a pack of M & M's, we'd have to cover 3.88 miles! Whew! We are also starting up a fun unit on the Human Body and the systems that keep us alive!
Social Studies: Wonders of the World! A FAVORITE of every class I have ever had! Students will research a Wonder at school and create an information poster about their location. Students AND parents will build a wonder at home! I asked students to turn in a building supply list so that I could help purchase supplies! All building is to be done at home, and brought to school on May 11th. This gives everyone LOTS of time to build a wonderful model!
Math: We are currently working on the easiest chapter of the year: Percentages! When this chapter is done, we will finish our year with probability and proportion. Students were treated to a full chapter of pre-algebra earlier in the month and are looking forward to Junior High Algebra!
Art
This year our classroom will participate in an Art History Unit. Students will learn about famous Periods of Art, as well as the artists that were a part of this time. Students will also participate in recreating pieces of famous art work, such as Stary Night by Vincent Van Goh, or Seurat's pointilism in Sunday Afternoon.
