Summer 2011
Second Grade
In 2nd grade math the class has finished a chapter on adding and subtracting numbers to 1,000. We discussed vocabulary words such as hundreds, tens, and ones. We focused on place value and the value of a digit. The class completed a number chart from 101 to 200 and wrote numbers that were before, after, and between other numbers. They compared numbers using the greater than/ less than symbol. We also solved addition and subtraction problems by regrouping.
The second graders also explored multiplication and division. They were introduced to the multiples of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. We took a look at the multiplication patterns of these numbers and made each group have the same number. During the last two weeks we used our time by reviewing the concepts introduced throughout the year.
Third Grade
The third grade math class estimated products of whole numbers and money amounts. They multiplied by 1-digit factors and divided by 1-digit divisors. We discussed multiplication and division patterns using multiples of 10 and 100. The class explored dividing with 2-digit quotients with remainders.
Fifth Grade
In 5th grade math the class completed the chapter on finding the perimeter, area, and volume of squares, rectangles, and some polygons. They focused on finding the circumference of circles as well. We identified 3-dimensional figures and their attributes and introduced vocabulary words such as face, edge, and vertices.
In the last chapter we focused on ratio, percent, and probability. They identified and found equal ratios, discussed the meaning of percent, and related percents to fractions and decimals. The class explored the terms likely, more likely, and less likely and found the probability of simple events.
